With the capture of Mindoro, U.S. Forces were positioned south of Luzon. However, MacArthur intended to land his forces at Lingayen, further north. This would place his troops close to several roads and railways on Luzon, which led to Manila—the main objective—through the plains in the center of the island. Luzon is the most populated of the three island groups making up the Philippine Archipelago. Its largest islands are the Luzon landmass, Palawan, Mindoro, Masbate, and Catanduanes. As of 2015, Luzon had a total population of 57,470,097, representing 56.91% of the entire population of the Philippines. Expect rains over several areas in Luzon within 24 hours due to the combined impacts of a low pressure area (LPA) and the tail-end of the frontal system, the State weather bureau said on Wednesday.
